Generate App-Specific Passwords
Step-by-step guides to generate app-specific passwords for IMAP email providers
Generate App-Specific Passwords
App-specific passwords (also called app passwords) are required by most email providers when connecting third-party applications like Lumyvo via IMAP/SMTP.
What Are App Passwords?
App passwords are unique, randomly generated passwords that:
- Work only for specific applications (like Lumyvo)
- Don't expose your main email password to third parties
- Can be revoked individually without affecting your main account
- Provide enhanced security compared to using your regular password
- Bypass two-factor authentication for authorized apps
Why Are They Required?
Most email providers require app passwords to:
- Protect your primary account credentials
- Enable secure third-party access without compromising 2FA
- Allow granular control over which apps can access your email
- Comply with modern security standards
Important Security Note: Never use your regular email password with Lumyvo or any third-party app. Always generate an app-specific password.

Security Best Practices
Protect Your App Passwords
- Never share app passwords with anyone
- Store securely using a password manager (e.g., 1Password, Bitwarden, LastPass)
- Revoke unused passwords regularly from your account settings
- Use unique passwords for each application or service
When to Revoke App Passwords
Revoke an app password if:
- You're no longer using the connected service
- You suspect the password may have been compromised
- You're switching to a different email provider
- You're disconnecting Lumyvo from your email account
How to Revoke App Passwords
GMX: Account → Security → Two-Factor Authentication → Regenerate password Yahoo Mail: Account Security → Manage app passwords → Remove app IONOS: Email Settings → Security → App-Specific Passwords → Delete iCloud Mail: Apple ID → Security → App-Specific Passwords → Revoke Zoho Mail: Accounts → Security → App Passwords → Revoke
Troubleshooting
"Invalid credentials" Error
Possible Causes:
- Using your regular password instead of app password
- App password copied incorrectly (includes spaces or missing characters)
- Two-factor authentication not enabled on your account
- IMAP/POP access disabled in account settings
Solutions:
- Verify you generated an app password (not using your regular password)
- Copy the entire app password without spaces
- Enable two-factor authentication in your account settings
- Enable IMAP access in your email provider's settings
- Regenerate the app password and try again
"Connection refused" or "Server not found"
Possible Causes:
- Incorrect IMAP/SMTP server address
- Wrong port number
- Firewall or network blocking the connection
Solutions:
- Double-check the server settings for your provider (see tables above)
- Verify SSL/TLS is enabled
- Try alternative SMTP ports (465 vs 587)
- Check your firewall or antivirus settings
App Password Not Generating
Possible Causes:
- Two-factor authentication not enabled
- Using free tier (Zoho Mail)
- Browser/cache issues
Solutions:
- Enable 2FA on your email account first
- Upgrade to a paid plan (for Zoho Mail free users)
- Clear browser cache or try a different browser
- Use a browser you've signed into recently (avoid Incognito)
Connection Works But Emails Not Processing
This is not a password issue. See the Connect IMAP/SMTP Accounts guide for troubleshooting email processing.
